VAASTU SHASTRA | POOJA ROOM

In many houses a separate room called the Pooja Room is kept aside to house the deities and to offer Pooja. Many times, this room is also used for prayer and meditation. If there is not much space for a room, at least a small space is reserved for the Pooja mandir. Here are some of the Vaastu Guidelines to be considered, while designing a Pooja Room.

LOCATION OF A POOJA ROOM
  • The Pooja room should be in the East, North or North-East corner.
  • If it is a very big plot the prayer room can be constructed in the center of the plot or center of the building.
  • The Pooja room should always be on the ground floor and never in the basement.
  • The Pooja room should not be on the upper floors.
  • If you do not have space for a Pooja room, you can have a mandir in the North-East corner of the kitchen, with the deity facing west.
  • The Pooja room should never be in the bedroom.
  • Ensure that the Toilet is not adjoining the Pooja room, and not even above or below the prayer room.
LOCATION OF THE IDOLS IN A POOJA ROOM:
  • The idols or God's pictures should be kept in the North-East, East and the West portion of the Pooja room.
  • The faces of the idols should not face the North, because then the worshiper has to face South which is not advisable.
  • Idols brought from ancient temples and broken idols and torn pictures should not be kept in the worship room.
  • Idols should not be kept facing each other.
  • The idols should be kept at least an inch away from the wall.
PLACEMENT OF POOJA THINGS IN THE POOJA ROOM:
  • If a lamp is placed in the Pooja room, it should always be in front of the idol.
  • All the material related to Pooja room should be kept in the South-East of the room.
  • No bell should be hung in the Pooja room.
  • Never place any photographs to dead people in the Pooja room.
  • A cupboard or show-case can be placed in the southern or western wall, but it should be lower than idols.
  • One should never use the puja room for any other purpose like for storing things, or for hiding money or valuables.
INTERIORS OF A POOJA ROOM:
  • The roof of the prayer room should be lower in comparison to the other rooms on the same floor. One can use false ceiling for the same.
  • If it is possible to have a pyramid within the pooja room it should be created as it is auspicious.
  • It is good to have a threshold at the entrance of the Pooja room.
  • The Pooja room should not have a door with one shutter.
  • The Pooja door should have two shutters.
  • Keep the pooja room absolutely clean.
  • If meditation is going to last for more than 15 minutes one should not sit exactly facing the idols. One should sit near the western wall facing the East without having to look directly at the idol.

VAASTU COLOURS IN A POOJA ROOM:
  • White or light yellow marble work in the room is preferred.
  • The color of the walls can be white, light yellow or light blue.
VAASTU EVALUATION EXERCISE FOR THE POOJA ROOM:
  • This exercise is just a guideline to help you decide, where to position the Pooja Room in your house plan. In case you already have a house, then this exercise will help you to evaluate the location of your existing Pooja Room as per Vaastu Shastra principles. Accordingly, you can decide if you want to make some corrections and changes to your house.

VAASTU SHASTRA | DINING ROOM

In earlier times, there was no separate dining room as people generally ate in the kitchen, (sitting on the floor) as it was convenient for the lady of the house to serve hot food right there. During functions when there were lots of people, they ate in the living hall. However today a dining room is a necessity as people eat at tables and it would be too cramped in the kitchen. Moreover people entertain a lot and need a separate room for that. But people who appreciate the advantages of eating in the kitchen, have incorporated these by having open kitchens!

Here are some of the Vaastu Guidelines to be considered, while designing a Dining Room.

VAASTU GUIDELINES FOR LOCATION OF A DINING ROOM:
  • East, South or West parts of the house are ideal for the Dining room.
  • The Dining Room can be an independent room or in continuation with the Kitchen.
  • If the Kitchen is on the ground floor, the Dining Room should also be located on the ground floor, and not on another floor.
VAASTU GUIDELINES FOR THE SHAPE OF THE DINING TABLE:
  • The dining table should be rectangular or square in shape.
  • Shapes like round, oval, hexagon or any other irregular shapes should be avoided for dining tables.

BEST POSITION OF THE DINING TABLE AND CHAIRS:
  • The dining table should be in the centre of the room and away from the walls.
  • The master of the house should sit on the South or South-West or West chairs so that he can sit facing East.
  • The other family members should sit facing East, West or North.
  • However, it is not advisable to sit facing South.
LOCATION OF THE DOOR TO THE DINING ROOM:
  • The door leading to the Dining hall can be in the East, North or West.
  • The door of the Dining room and the main entrance door of the house should not face each other directly.
LOCATION OF THE WASH BASIN IN A DINING ROOM:
  • It is preferable not to have a wash basin in the dining room.
  • If a wash basin has to be placed in the dining room, then, it should be in the North or East of the room.
  • There should not be any attached toilet near the Dining room.
VAASTU COLOURS FOR THE DINING ROOM:
  • The walls of the dining hall can be light blue, yellow, saffron or light green color and shades of pink or orange.
  • Nature portraits and paintings in the dining room make the atmosphere happy.

VAASTU EVALUATION EXERCISE FOR THE DINING ROOM:
This exercise is just a guideline to help you decide, where to position the Dining Room in your house plan. In case you already have a house, then this exercise will help you to evaluate the location of your existing Dining Room as per Vastu Shastra principles. VAASTU SHASTRA | BATHROOM (TOILET)

The Toilets and Bathrooms today, are an integral part of the House unlike in the olden days when there was no water supply through pipes and no drainage and sewage pipeline system, and people were forced to use open spaces as Toilets for daily ablutions. However today with the easy availability of water through taps and underground sewage pipeline system, toilets and bathrooms have become a part of the house, with the W.C., wash basin and bath shower/bath tub , all combined in one room, commonly known as the Bathroom.

Here are some of the Vaastu Guidelines to be considered, whiledesigning a Bathroom, also known as a Toilet.

LOCATION OF A BATHROOM:
  • Toilets should to be in the North-West or West of the house/building.
  • If it is an attached toilet, it should preferably be to the North-West side of the room.
  • If the West and North-West corners are not available, the next best option is the South-East of the building or room.
  • Avoid constructing a toilet in the center of the building and in the North-East corner of the building.
  • The toilet should be one or two feet higher than the ground level.
FLOORING OF A BATHROOM:
  • The Bathroom floor level should be one or two feet higher than the ground level.
  • Marble or granite tiles should not be used for flooring in the Bathroom.
  • Use anti-skid flooring only.

LOCATION OF WASH BASIN, W.C., BATH TUB/SHOWER, AND OTHER FIXTURES:
  • The Wash Basin, Bathtubs and shower area should be placed on the North-East, North, or East sides of the room.
  • The Commode or WC should be in the West, the South or the North-West side of the west in the Bathroom.
  • The commode should be oriented such that person sitting on the WC, faces either towards the North or the South and not in the E-W direction.
  • When lying in a bathtub, the head position should be in the South.
  • Mirrors in the Bathroom may be on the North and East walls.

POSITIONS OF DOORS AND WINDOWS IN A BATHROOM:
  • In the Bathroom, if possible, there should be a small window in the East or West and a bigger window in the North after providing for privacy.
  • The door of the Bathroom should be in the East or the North direction as far as possible.
VAASTU COLORS FOR A BATHROOM:
  • The colour of the walls of the Bathroom can be according to one's choice but it is preferable to have light shades. Avoid red and black color.
VAASTU EVALUATION EXERCISE FOR THE BATHROOM (TOILET):
This exercise is just a guideline to help you decide, where to position the Bathroom in your house plan. In case you already have a house, then this exercise will help you to evaluate the location of your existing Bathroom as per Vastu Shastra principles. Accordingly, you can decide if you want to make some corrections and changes to your house.
  •  Note the score for the following question and enter it in the score sheet.
  • Total the points.
  • The points indicate how favorable your House is, according to Vaastu.
