VAASTU SHASTRA | BEDROOM

The Bedroom is the private place, where you can unwind, relax and sleep. Something that everyone has in common is sleeping. It takes up approximately one third of your life and therefore is an extremely important factor in your overall health. It is also the space where you get dressed, read and study.

Here are some of the Vastu Guidelines to be considered while designing a Master Bedroom or Children's Bedroom or Guest Bedroom.

LOCATION OF BEDROOM:
  • Main Bedrooms in the South.
  • Avoid Bedrooms in North-East corner.
  • Avoid Bedrooms in the middle of the House.
  • Avoid Bedrooms above Car Porch/Garage, Kitchen.

LOCATION OF A MASTER BEDROOM :
  • Master Bedroom should be in South-West.
  • If there is more than one floor, the Master Bedroom should be on the upper floor, in the South-West corner.
  • Avoid Master Bedroom in the South-East corner.
LOCATION OF A GUEST BEDROOM:
  • Guest Bedroom should be in the North-West. This corner represents Vayu or movement which implies that Guests who sleep in this bedroom will not stay for long and get going on their way.
LOCATION OF A CHILDREN'S BEDROOM :
  • Children's Bedroom should be in the West or East side.
SHAPE OF A BEDROOM:
  • Square or Rectangle shapes are the most suitable shapes for the bedroom furniture arrangement.
DIRECTION FOR SLEEPING IN A BEDROOM:
  • Avoid Head in North - In fact only a dead body is kept with the head in the North and the feet pointing towards the South.
  • Head in East: East is the direction of knowledge and enlightenment. Sleeping with the head in the East increases knowledge and increases a liking for spiritualism. For this reason, children should always sleep with their head in the east.
  • Head in West: Sleeping with one's head in the West is good for people who do not permanently reside in the house, like guests and married daughters, in their parents' house.
  • Head in South. South is the best direction for sleeping. Sleeping with one's head in the South brings happiness and sound sleep.
DOOR AND WINDOWS POSITION IN A BEDROOM:
  • Door should open 90 degrees into the bedroom.- A door that cannot open fully will limit the flow of opportunities.
  • Door position in East, West or North. Avoid fixing doors in the South-West of a bedroom.
  • Main Windows in East or North. And smaller windows in the West is ideal.

POSITION OF A BED :
  • Avoid sleeping in alignment with sharp corners. They should be camouflaged with plants or rounded off.
  • Avoid sleeping under beams or slanted ceiling. The remedy is to create a false ceiling.
  • Keep beds 2" away from walls.
  • Avoid bed directly facing the door. But the bed should be placed in a position where the occupants can see anyone coming into the rooms.
ARRANGEMENT OF FURNITURE IN THE BEDROOM:
  • Safe in South-West, opening towards North.
  • Open space in the North-East.
  • Beds should not be shaky. The mattress should provide good support to the body while resting.
  • Dressing table should be in the East or North.
  • Study table should face East, North or North-East.
  • Avoid Television. If a TV is kept, it should never be directly in front of the bed as it works as a mirror and generates negative energy. It can be kept to the right or left of the bed at an angle for comfortable viewing from bed.
  • Computers should be in the South-East.
  • Wardrobes should be in the North-West or South-West.
  • Keep things that make you happy in front of the Bedroom door.Upon entering, your bedroom, the first thing you see should be something that gives you the feeling of peace and serenity such as a photograph, a favorite quote or even flowers that enhance these positive feelings.
  • Keep objects that remind you of unfinished tasks out of the room, or at least out of sight as the bedroom should be a place where you can totally relax.
  • Attached Bathroom should be in the East or South-East.
  • Avoid a mirror directly opposite the bed.
  • Avoid Religious idols in the Bedroom
  • Avoid clutter in the Bedroom as it represents stagnation.
  • Avoid storing things under the bed.

VAASTU COLOURS OF BEDROOM WALLS:
  • Walls should be light rose, gray, blue, chocolate, dark green etc and not bright colurs.
VAASTU EVALUATION EXERCISE FOR THE BEDROOMS:
This exercise is just a guideline to help you decide, where to position the Bedrooms in your house plan. In case you already have a house, then this exercise will help you to evaluate the location of your existing Bedrooms as per Vastu Shastra principles. Accordingly, you can decide if you want to make some corrections and changes to your house.

VAASTU SHASTRA | STUDY ROOM

The Study room, as the name suggests is used for studying or as a library or as a Home Office. Sometimes it is also used for Sleeping. It is normally located in the Upper Floors where there is peace and privacy. The Study room should have a lot of natural light and quiet.

Here, are some of the Vastu Guidelines to be considered when designing a Study Room.

LOCATION OF STUDY ROOM:
  • West - Study Room should be in the West of the House, as it is believed that Mercury, which increases brain power, Jupiter which increases ambition and curiosity, Moon which helps in the generation of new thoughts and ideas and Venus which helps in the growth of talent have a better effect if the study room is in the West.
SHAPE OF A STUDY ROOM:
  • Pyramid Shape- A Study Room used only for studying and not for sleeping can be a pyramidal shaped room.
LOCATION OF WINDOWS AND THE DOOR TO THE STUDY:
  • Door to the Study Room can be in the North-East or North.
  • Large Windows can be in the East wall.
  • Smaller windows can be in the West wall.
POSITION OF FURNITURE AND FIXTURES IN A STUDY ROOM:
  • The Study table should face North, East or North-East.
  • Book Racks can be in theNorth, East or North-East. But never in South-West and North-West of the room.
  • Avoid cabinets or tables in the centre of the Study Room.
IDEAL COLOURS FOR A STUDY ROOM:
  • The Colour of the Study Room walls should be Green, Light Green, Blue, Cream or White. Light colors are preferred over dark ones.

VAASTU SHASTRA | ENTRANCE VERANDAH

Entrance Verandah is a roofed open space, in front of the House that leads into it. Vaastu Shastra, an ancient Indian Building Science developed thousands of years ago, lays down guidelines on the design of a Verandah. The basic principle of Vaastu Shastra is to bring about harmony between man, nature and the built environment by the correct location of the different spaces and the building in the Site.

Here, are some of the Vaastu Guidelines to be considered when designing an Entrance Verandah.

LOCATION OF VERANDAH:
  • Preference: East or North portion of the house.
  • Avoid: South or the West sides of the main building.
VERANDAH SHAPE:
  • The corners of the Veranda should not be cut or rounded.
FURNITURE POSITION IN VERANDAH:
  • Heavy furniture and seating should be placed in the South-West portion.
  • If there is a Swing in the Verandah, it should be in the East-West axis.
  • Light plants and flowers can be placed in the North-East portion.
  • Flower pots in the Verandah should be small in size.
  • Avoid flower pots with Creepers in the Verandah.
  • A shoe rack, if needed, can be built or placed in the North-West portion.
VERANDAH ROOF:
  • The height of the Verandah roof should be less than that of the main building.
  • The roof should not be made of tin or asbestos.
WINDOWS IN VERANDAH:
  • The Verandah should have maximum number of windows opening into the rest of the House.

VAASTU EVALUATION EXERCISE FOR THE ENTRANCE VERANDAH:
This exercise is just a guideline to help you decide, where to position the Entrance Verandah in your house plan. VAASTU SHASTRA FACTOR | FIVE ELEMENTS OF NATURE

According to Vaastu Shastra every living and non-living element on Earth is composed of the five elements - Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Space.
  • SPACE (Aakaasha) - the unending region beyond Earth in which not only our Solar System but the entire Galaxy exists. It provides shelter to the other four elements.
  • AIR (Vaayu) - the atmosphere above the Earth consists of Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, water vapour, Dust etc which are all essential for living things to flourish. Human physical comfort values are directly and sensitively dependent on correct humidity, air flow, temperature of air, air pressure, air composition and its content.
  • FIRE (Agni) - It represents light and heat without which life will be extinct. Days and nights, seasons, energy, enthusiasm, passion, vigour are because of light and heat only.
  • WATER (Jala) - This is represented by rain, river, sea and is in the form of liquid, solid (ice) and gas (steam, cloud). Every plant and animal is composed of water in different proportions.
  • EARTH (Bhumi) - Earth, the third planet in order from the Sun, is a big magnet with North and South poles as centers of attractions. Its magnetic field and gravitational force has considerable effect on everything on the Earth, living and non-living. Seasons are formed because the Earth is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees and because it revolves around the Sun once every year. Day and night are formed because the Earth rotates on its axis from West to East.
There is an invisible and constant interaction between these elements. These forces act for or against each other to create harmony or disharmony. It is upto the living things, to understand the effectiveness of the five elements and use them to their advantage in creating a harmonious environment to live in.

  • ANIMALS, BIRDS, INSECTS, PLANTS- have natural defenses against a wide variety of unfavourable climates. They adapt their body size, shape or temperature to adjust with the hostile climate. But some creatures like termites, birds, ants not only adapt to nature, they seek to create a comfortable living environment by building a suitable home.
  • COMPASS TERMITES- For example, the Compass Termites of Western Australia, maintain the temperature inside their nests to within 1 degree of 31 Celcius, day and night, summer and winter, while the external temperature varies between 3 C to 42 C. This is achieved by building a wedge shaped tower mound (Earth) of 3 Metres height which always points North. As the tower heats up, air inside  (Space) rises drawing fresh cool air (Air) from below. Also the wind blowing across the top of the mound helps to suck in fresh air through the nest. And the termites regulate the flow of air through their nests, by blocking and unblocking the channels.
  • HUMANS- Similarly, for centuries, man has manipulated the five elements to build comfortable houses even in the most hostile environments. For example, in the desert, where the heat of the Sun (Fire) can make it impossible to live, man has built houses with internal courtyards (Space), thick walls (Earth), slit windows (Air) and water bodies and fountains (Water) to cool the house by ensuring good ventilation and flow of air, just like the termites mentioned above.
  • But unfortunately today, man gives precedence to the appearance and size of his house as his social position and personal ego are more important. In the process he has forgotten to manipulate the elements to create a naturally comfortable, airy house. To create comfort he is forced to use gadgets like fans, air conditioners, heaters etc which consume so much of energy and are believed to be unhealthy too.
Vaastu Shastra lays down principles on the location, direction and disposition of  buildings, so that humans can absorb the positive effects of the Panchabhutaas -Five elements of nature, throughout the day which will in turn ensure enhanced health, wealth, prosperity and happiness.

This post is about the Vaastu Shastra Factor | Panchabhutaas - Five elements of nature and their effects on living beings and building structures. Read  about another Vaastu Shastra Factor that affects us and our buildings, namely:
