In earlier times, there was no separate dining room as people generally ate in the kitchen, (sitting on the floor) as it was convenient for the lady of the house to serve hot food right there. During functions when there were lots of people, they ate in the living hall. However today a dining room is a necessity as people eat at tables and it would be too cramped in the kitchen. Moreover people entertain a lot and need a separate room for that. But people who appreciate the advantages of eating in the kitchen, have incorporated these by having open kitchens!
Here are some of the Vaastu Guidelines to be considered, while designing a Dining Room.

VAASTU GUIDELINES FOR LOCATION OF A DINING ROOM:
- East, South or West parts of the house are ideal for the Dining room.
- The Dining Room can be an independent room or in continuation with the Kitchen.
- If the Kitchen is on the ground floor, the Dining Room should also be located on the ground floor, and not on another floor.
- The dining table should be rectangular or square in shape.
- Shapes like round, oval, hexagon or any other irregular shapes should be avoided for dining tables.
- The dining table should be in the centre of the room and away from the walls.
- The master of the house should sit on the South or South-West or West chairs so that he can sit facing East.
- The other family members should sit facing East, West or North.
- However, it is not advisable to sit facing South.
- The door leading to the Dining hall can be in the East, North or West.
- The door of the Dining room and the main entrance door of the house should not face each other directly.
LOCATION OF THE WASH BASIN IN A DINING ROOM:
- It is preferable not to have a wash basin in the dining room.
- If a wash basin has to be placed in the dining room, then, it should be in the North or East of the room.
- There should not be any attached toilet near the Dining room.
- The walls of the dining hall can be light blue, yellow, saffron or light green color and shades of pink or orange.
- Nature portraits and paintings in the dining room make the atmosphere happy.
